What is mold?
Mold is a fungus. Unfortunately, it is not a tasty fungus like mushrooms. Instead, mold spreads around by spores (seeds) which float in the air until they find a place to land, then if the environment is right, begin to grow. In small amounts, mold spores are usually harmless, but when they land on a damp place in your home, they can start to grow. When mold is growing on a surface, spores can be released into the air where they can be easily inhaled. If you’re sensitive to mold and inhale a large number of spores, you could experience serious health issues.
What are the signs of mold in your house?
These mold spores are all around us, floating inside through doors and windows. Mold needs two things to survive.
First, to grow and thrive mold needs moisture, which is why the damp places in your house – bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, basements – are the most likely places to find mold growth. Mold also needs a food source, something like wood or dust, so means you can even find mold in areas such as carpets and furniture. The mold may not be visible to the eye, so when considering mold testing do an air sample test as soon as possible.
How is mold testing performed?
Most mold testing involves taking a sample of either the air or a surface. The first is taking air samples with a spore trap. The spore trap consists of a sticky surface that collects particles in the air as they move around. After collecting particles the spore trap is sent to the mold testing laboratory for analysis. The mold testing laboratory opens the spore trap and applies some stains to the sticky surface so that the mold spores can absorb, and then identifies the types of mold spores captured during the sampling process.
Mold testing is a precautionary for every homeowner in Miami FL, even if visible signs of mold are not present. In fact, mold testing is even more important if you can smell mold but cannot see it, so you can find the source of mold and deal with the issue before it gets out of control. Even if you don’t think that mold is present in the home, mold testing can give you peace of mind.
